The Gross Margin
The Gross margin for residential demand service should be 60% or more. Maintenance Agreement revenue and cost should be treated as a separate department. Demand service direct costs should include labor, labor burden and part costs. The reason gross margin needs to be at this level is because of the overhead required to support the service department; usually 45% to 50%. Thus you need a 60% gross margin to make a 10 to 15% profit. Considering all the resources and effort required for service, you deserve a minimum of 15 to 20%.
Pricing practices, labor management practices, dispatching practices, truck replenishment practices and many other processes affect direct costs and consequent gross margin. But remember the target is 60% or more gross margin

Tracking Sales Leads
Tracking sales leads is a fundamental step in measuring the performance of your marketing investment. Considering that some consultants say a sales lead costs as much as $300, it's imperative you closely monitor what your marketing investment yields in both the amount of sales leads and in sales dollars. If the $300 average per sales lead is true and the closure rate happens to be 50%, you must invest $600 in marketing for every sale made!
This does not have to be the case if you use a service based Business Model built on a maintenance agreement platform, but it still speaks to the need to closely monitor and measure the performance of your marketing investment. A good lead management system>
- Identifies the lead source
- Identifies closed leads
- Identifies average sale by lead type
- Identifies closure rate by lead type
- Identifies all open leads
- Is an intregal part of the sales management system
A final comment open leads, never give up on them until you know the customer has bought from someone else.
